Living the Prayer of Jesus through Racial Sobriety
Matthew 15:21-28
The desperation of the Canaanite woman demonstrates that all who come to Jesus despite the obstacle of others’ prejudices are heard. Jesus addresses the woman in public which breaks with the norm. He jokes with her in the context of the racial stereotypes of the day which see non-Jews as ‘dogs.’ In the face of racism and sexism the courage and persistence of the Canaanite woman is captured for all time. It is an encouragement for all who come before God asking for healing of the sick members of our world who are afflicted with racial dysfunction. God is able and willing. If we have the faith – God has the power. The gospel ends with the triumphant conclusion, “And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.”
