Living the Prayer of Jesus through Racial Sobriety

Matthew 2: 13-15, 19-23

The drama surrounding the life of the Holy Family is the drama that confronts the human family today. The lesson of the three kings teaches that all cultures are searching for the truth, and peace on earth. This search cannot be limited to a particular culture because God uses all cultures. A second element is the political oppression that forces families to immigrate to other countries out of fear for their lives. We are to receive those fleeing oppression as if they are the Holy Family. But we receive them with the same neglect as the Holy Family of Jesus. We also witness the reality of intra-racial genocide. Herod and Archelaus are Jews, but they hate their own people who they fear might take their class privilege. The Holy Family can serve as a model of the many obstacles that families face. This is an American story because Americans are immigrants themselves who learn to hate other immigrants.
