Living the Prayer of Jesus through Racial Sobriety
Year B Gospel Commentary

18th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Mark 9:2-10
Like the disciples on the mount of the Transfiguration of Jesus, we have
our moments of blinding clarity. We see the long line of history of
human suffering, and our place in today?s history to make our
difference. We like Peter want to stay at this level of consciousness.
It is so beautifull and fulfilling. But these moments of the divine
visitation don?t last too long. As in the gospel, they vanish as quickly
as they formed. We leave the mountain top of joy to the valley of
struggle. And our blininging clarity becomes muddle in the focus of
dialy life. We often feel a loss of confidence. This gospel encourages
us that the first disciples knew the mountain top highs and the valley
lows of living the spiritual life on earth. We can only inhale the
grandeur of our mission so long, and them we must exhale in order to
carry on. Be encouraged!
