Living the Prayer of Jesus through Racial Sobriety
Year B Gospel Commentary

1st Sunday of Lent
Mark 1:12-15

Jesus begins the journey of announcing the new era. The number 40 throughout the Old Testament initiates a time of destruction or a life threatening situation before a new era. Noah witnessed the 40 days and nights of rain., Moses led the mixed multitude for 40 years in the desert. Jesus is the fullness of the ark buider who saves all those with him, as well as the New Moses who leads all to the Promised Land of heaven. Our focus on purification is what the season of Lent is all about. It is a time for our moral, spiritual and emotional inventory of our lifestyle. Time to clear the dead things out. Bring new life in. Each one of us is called to take stock of our salvation as disciples of Jesus who are called to go to the world as apostles. Our 40 days can be a social ritual or we can make it our time to repent from being cultural Christians and actually become the Good News because we believe in Jesus. This will certainly issue in the new era as we "become the change we want to see."
