Living the Prayer of Jesus through Racial Sobriety
Year B Gospel Commentary

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mark 8:27-35
People care for us and they do not want anything to harm us. Pete is the friend of Jesus and seeks to talk to him in a private but concerned way. Jesus criticizes him for trying to block, prevent, and manipulate his call to follow the direction of his Father. And likewise, we will have those who say to us in loving ways to "go along to get along." We too have to ask what others think of us as Jesus did, but like Jesus, what God thinks of us is the most important call on our lives. As we continue to be about our witnessing to racial and ethnic sobriety, we face the reality of others fears for our future. Let us witness to Jesus call to being the unity of the human family. This spirit is captured in a prayer that ends with these words: "And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in this world, so that we can do what others claim cannot be done."
