Here Jesus responds to those testing him about the law of marriage and divorce. Jesus clearly emphasizes that the relationship is more important than the debate about legalism. The ministry of bringing unity to the human family is moving beyond the legal formalities to demonstrate God’s desire. His desire is to see us in right relationship with one another more than the relationship to the legalism of his time. As disciples of Christ, our interest is in the building up of the community, more so than binding people to restrictions. The law that we are most concerned about is that we love one another as Jesus loves us. When we realize his law of love, our relationships become “a marriage made in heaven.” |
