Living the Prayer of Jesus through Racial Sobriety
Year B Gospel Commentary

34th Sunday Christ the King
John 18:33-37
We end this cycle of gospel readings with this dramatic scene of the judgment of the world. Pilate thinks that he is judging Jesus, but history concludes it was Jesus judging him. The truth judges us all. Jesus testifies to the truth and proclaims that those who are about truth make up his kingdom. In the struggle to bring forth the realization that we are brothers and sisters, we will find ourselves judged by the ?powers that be.? In these moments we find consolation in the words of Jesus that the truth seekers belong to his kingdom. Standing for the truth in a world of self-interest and self-deception will be a lonely place for us as it was for Jesus. But like Jesus, we have to heed his voice as we find our own ?voice? of racial sobriety.
