John 2:13-25

The evangelist, John, is known as "the beloved disciple." He was close to Jesus. Those close to us see us at our best and worse. Here John shows the passion of Jesus to the point of outrage and violence to property. The anger of God or the wrath of God in the bible brings fear. We think of the exile from the Garden of Eden, the Great Flood, the Plagues on Egypt and so many other incidents. All of these echo the complaint of Jesus that our activities are not worthy of the God we serve. Many of our activities are self-serving. Like the great prophets Jesus is outraged with the empty rituals in the Temple that do not touch the lives of people when they leave the Temple. Jesus makes the statement that he would rebuild the Temple. However, it was a long time before anyone understood make he meant in his rampage. We are his temple. We are the Body of Christ. Are we doing better than those religious people of his day? Would we find ourselves in the hands of wrathful God for not living our discipleship?
