Living the Prayer of Jesus through Racial Sobriety

Mark 1:40-45

The old adage that "Jesus is a doctor in the sick room and a lawyer in the court room" could have very well come from our gospel today. The leper is made whole by Jesus and his re-admission to society is facilitated. He is told to obey the Law of Moses, perform the riutal and be seen by the priests. However, the irony is that Jesus asks him not to tell anyone. How could someone come back to life in society after being seen as cursed by God and not shout from the highest mountain. Mark as an evangelist wants to demonstrate that Jesus did not come to replace the religious customs of his day. Mark shows a Jesus who respects the tradition of Judaism, its rituals and the leadership of the priestly caste. The work of making people whole is the beginning of praising God. When we raise up people's horizons we give them reason to praise God. Those who have lived in the margins rejoice when they are brought into the light. Jesus directs the praise to his heavenly Father. We are called upon to bring those who are broken into wholeness and direct them to give their praise to God for the powerful gifts which God has bestowed to us.
