The Body and Blood of Christ
Mark 14:12-16, 22-26
The Passover is the memorial of the journey from slavery in Egypt to the freedom of a Promised Land. Jesus in the Passover ritual gives his disciples the Eucharist as bread for our Christian journey. The Eucharist provides the spiritual energy to journey from the sinful places in our lives to grace filled horizons. The Eucharist also provides us with food for the ministry of healing our social wounds. As the Bread of Life heals our wounds from hatred, bigotry and neglect, our humanity is restored. What a freedom we enjoy when we are fully functioning human beings.
St. Kathrine Drexel, founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, declared that the Eucharist is the "gift of total giving." St. Kathrine is the patron saint of "Social Sobriety;" that is, being a fully functional human being free of racisms (in regard to race, gender and class). As we realize the depth of God’s love for us in the sacrament of total giving, we can become bread for the world. In giving ourselves totally to others, we become Eucharist to others for the in the journey toward racial and social sobriety.
